It so happened that I fell in love with  jal tarang at first sight  (lol – first hearing )!!

Jal Tarang (literally meaning waves in water) indicates the motion of sound created or modified with the aid of water. It is one of the traditional instruments in Hindustani classical music. There are bowls of varying size, filled with water upto different levels. The number of bowls and amount of water is adjusted according to the melody being played.

I got only one thing to say…! “CHEER UP buddy…! Long way to go…!  “

Ever wondered why God puts one through a tough situation? Its not to make us feel ‘inferior’ or ‘incompetent’. Do understand that its to make us aware of what we hadn’t taken care of  knowingly or unknowingly. If instead one gets dejected or depressed and think that this is the end of world – then for sure you are a loser! (Atleast here, I would like to mention – if you don’t like the way this paragraph was started – lets put it the way you want to – ultimately the it points to the feelings mentioned).

Not getting through a test or interview or whatever should never be a cause for an ‘emotional turmoil’. I know – I sound a little off-human-track when I tell this! But what I mean is – one can get sad, but that should not ultimately lead to emanation of negative energy!  Once there was a short msg being forwarded, the words meant -  ‘Cry for a reason as much as you wish to – but never again should you cry for the same thing’! (note : not the exact words) . This is what I would like to stress upon. The negative feeling/sadness/depression/anything/everything not right – should last only for sometime – ultimately realise what has to be done . Stop bothering about what was done if you can’t do anything there!

Be positive – they say – when you don’t get something, its because something better is in store for you! So cheer up..! Realize what you missed/forgot/didn’t think of! Try to find positive things from what you are currently going through or faced. Prepare to face the worse! Sharpen your swords ! Cut off the heads of the n-headed-devil laughing at you when you are crumbling down!

PS : Post inspired by lot of things happening around! Sorry if this doesn’t meet the standard expected!

I would like to start this post by thanking the placement cell for organising the session on GD by Mr.Vinod.

The session on GD – Group Discussion was for all the students who had registered with the placement cell this year. Though we were a bit late to reach (20 mins ) – Mr.Vinod hadn’t started with the session but was telling things about his life.

The first thing he had to say was that he had just his life to take as example – as he knows it very well – than that of others. What I felt from this is that – be confident and proud of what you are – this can take you a long way in life.

Now coming to the details of session – 13 of us  were there – me, aparna, sujeshma, athira, veena, alfred, alwin, appu, anand, arun, avinash, dheeraj and arjun. It was supposed to be a 3 hr session from 8:30am t0 11:30am. Fortunately or unfortunately the actual session commenced at 9:30 am.

GD, as all of you might be knowing, stands for Group Discussion. GD is being widely adopted by organizations coming for placements and institutions as a part of  admission for masters courses. Many get butterflies on just hearing the name, and as Mr.Vinod quoted as students saying that – ‘its an elimination round na’. But after this session – we all felt its not so .

In GD, they give a topic to a group of say 15-20 members (numbers just tentative). You get some seconds to jot down points on that topic in a piece of paper as to help you speak a few words on it. The members of the group are given about 1 or 2 minutes to speak on the topic. When the oversee-r of the group says ‘in group’ the actual discussions start.

Now getting in to the finer details and highlights of session.

First thing that was pointed out – the body language – how one should sit for a GD/interview while attending as well as while waiting for one’s turn. A relaxed position just as on an easy-chair is a strict no-no! You can call it an ‘attention’ – doesn’t mean you have to stand at attention on a chair – but be in an attentive position – hands on the armrest, back straight,legs in the front (not crossed over/ crossed backwards), confidence in eyes and a cool nature .

This is what is expected. One might feel – who cares all this? The companies do care! A person’s body language gives away his exact nature. Psychological analysis is done like this…! So be careful or else they would take you to be aggressive/lazy!

Next, we were given a piece of paper and pencil to jot down the points. The topic given was ‘ Why are love marriages better than arranged marriages’. We were asked to note down points regarding the same so as to speak about it.

An important tip with respect to this is – identify the thing in spot light and the thing affected. As it is crystal clear from the topic – love marriage enjoys the limelight here and arranged marriage is the one thats being affected (speaking with help of examples). One important thing to note here is that, even if you don’t personally agree with the topic, you’ll have to present it in a beautiful way which also includes points that supports the topic – and not one-sidedly against it (ultimate goal is getting the job! dont forget that !!).

Then one by one, we were asked to do a short talk for 1 min on the topic.

Greet the group members – but don’t look at the interviewer present there – he’s gonna give you butterflies for sure! Introduce yourself.

Present the best 3 points from the points you have jotted down. If you have examples from experience or relevant sources include the same – but NEVER DEVIATE from the topic or time limit!

The most important matter of concern – is our voice and the way we present our points. Voice should be legible,audible and the way of presentation be such that the group members hear you loud and correct. One shouldn’t shout but! Never go on a ‘fast-forward’ way of talking or just as they say ‘ I felt as the super-fast bus just went ‘ !

Another important point is – leave your comfort zone, else you would suffer! Look at all the group members while you are talking and not just a single person (you can stare at the young lady sitting opposite to you later )! Have in mind that you are addressing a group. A word to all those who listen – look at the person who is doing the talking. If possible note down his/her name. Jot down any points which you feel you need a clarification/ you feel can use to ask questions in the group session.

After talking – have a proper conclusion to it and thank all the members to have patiently listened to you!

While we were all taking our turns, the trainer pointed out the goods and odds in it. For me it was to reduce the speed at which I talked (being a malyali, can’t help it though! ).

One should be very confident while talking – but  not stubborn/argumentative. Even if your points are already mentioned by the person before you, don’t worry – just change the words and present it in your own style .

After all of us presented, the trainer told ‘in group’. Athira, who had already noted down my point about the reduction in giving dowry in case of love marriages – started off the group session.

The entry in to the group session (when its open for discussions) is important. Just wait for a few seconds to see if anyone starts. Be very careful that you are controlling your emotions – don’t just jump off your chair and shout – you’ll be thrown off soon!

If you have any questions for a particular person, address him/her by his name and politely notify that you disagree with the point mentioned with supportive arguments. People can take sides and the group discussion continues. While interrupting or entering in to the discussion between people, ask them permission ‘Excuse me, can I say point in this regard’ or so. Then say your point. The one who takes control of the situation finally at the last moment – saying ‘So dear friends….’ and concludes the discussion – becomes a hero for sure – has the qualities of a leader!

No parallel discussions are allowed when there is a discussion already going on. Always remember that group discussions are not debates and hence argumenting or creating a pandemonium doesn’t count in your favor! Clapping is also not allowed. Be careful about the language used and the tone of speaking.

If there’s any doubt regarding the clarity of topic – do not be ashamed/afraid to ask the interviewer what they expect from the group on the topic.

As far as possible try to be well informed in the current affairs. Read newspapers, develop soft skills, speak in English (but don’t be a disturbance to others!!).

A major problem pointed out about students/professionals from Kerala is the lack of communication skills. If you feel its a high time to start with it, don’t hesitate! Go for it. Mr. Vinod came up with suggestions about having an English club, group discussions in the class atleast twice in a month etc.

For winding up the session, we were asked to write the opinions about the session, whether we gained anything, whether it was a useful one etc. Handing back the paper, most of us felt that ‘Yes, its high time to begin’. Sure – Better Late, Than Never

A Libran by birth and nature , my birthday falls on the 1st of October. On the 30th Sept, I had a great fall in the class room (what comes to my mind is ‘Humpty-Dumpty had a great fall’ ). My friends were saying ‘chakka vetti itta pole undayirunu’ (sorry that i’m not going to give a transliteration ). It had taken a toll on me and slept off very early.

My friends (classmates,batchmates and juniors) gave a wonderful b’day wish at 12 in the hostel .. a beautiful moment – i woke up startled! Thank god they din’t scare me off (as they had planned to ). And a few of my friends from LH wished and a few others also rung up . Replying to the wish messages – started off the second session of sleep .

Mom,dad and bro wished at 5 in the morning just when i got up . ‘Happy ENDHIRAN’ was what i heard from my bro!! .
It was a beautiful morning visit to the temple near preethy hostel.

After that few of us went to attend the session on ‘Group Discussions’ by Mr.Vinod. That was a nice one .

Then came enquires about treat (mixed emotions ). 9 of us went to Little Star Restaurant nearby our college – and the first session of treat was done with. Had a nice time with friends @Gallery – the place any GECian would always long to be.

It was about 3 30 when three of my friends who had missed the earlier treat came . By the time it was drizzling and we all went to milma – the venue of treat number two!

We all said ‘bye’ s and left to the respective hostels to head to our homes . On the way to bus stop from hostel, saw the next set of friends who had missed both the treats! (My fate? luck ?? !!). Dairy milk and kit-kats could answer them!

By the time i reached home – my purse had started crying!!

That was one of the most beautiful days at GEC, not because it was my b’day – but because these moments with friends would be cherished forever .

Love you all .. don’t want to miss you people… but we know.. it will soon happen…

Time and tide never waited , as they say

Lack of time – is never a reason for this – having ample time for everything and anything! Well you know – you just want all – time,thoughts and presence of mind – together for this. And each of these were so busy to have a meet-up to-day. .A well justified absence right?

Inspiration for a come-back is just this – a well occupying break from the monotony of a 2-3 month old examination schedule – lab exams , series tests , again lab exams , then university exams , blahs , whews – oh!!! Hold on – am giving it a rest now!

And also this – I had ma old school-mate asking tentative suggestions to spend vacation – a better way to kill time.And lo! Sugggested the idea of blogging.

That made me think – I had orphaned my blog for such a long time and its better to take care it – a revival – now is the time!

In S3 there is a Programming in C Lab and Electronics (Analog) Lab.

Its anyways true that luck matters a lot especially in lab exams (though many may not support it,i know).

For many , the two labs were ok.Lucky guys(I would say!)..To some one was bad and another better(for those like me)..and to the rest one was bad and other was bitter..(that’s really depressing..)..

Anyways,now I can say atlast all exams in S3 are over (as for now!)..Hope to pass…!
